This morning in my dream I was somehow given an electric guitar and recruited for a band about to go onstage. There were a few other guitars so I was going to play “Beer Guitar,” neither lead guitar nor rhythm guitar. My job would be to just stand there sullenly drinking beer and add that certain little touch of je ne sais quoi whenever the spirit moved me or when I perceived that it was totally and absolutely unnecessary. Finally! Somebody Up There gets me. The job I was born to do. Beer Guitar was the best job in the band and I felt trully blessed to have it bestowed on me so randomly yet fortuitously. Though the gig had fallen in my lap, like a bolt out of the blue, as it were, I nevertheless felt uniquely qualified and fully prepared to take on this challenge. As if every twist and turn of my Musical Education was leading to this magical moment. I would be the best darn Beer Guitarist there ever was, or ever would be.
This dream of Rock ‘N’ Roll Glory caused me to reflect back on the time I auditioned for a role on Broadway, and I was cast as the leading man in the show! I got the coveted part, but then . . . . well, things don’t always turn out like you hope they will. Tune in to my blog tomorrow, same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel, to hear how this story turned out.
